The Technical University of Crete was founded in 1977 in Chania and accepted its first students in 1984. The purpose of the institution is to conduct research and teach in new engineering fields, as well as to develop links with Greek industry. The staff is composed of 56 full-time professors, approximately 50 adjunct professors, 40 laboratory assistants and 50 administrative employees.
The campus is located on a panoramic site in the peninsula of Akrotiri and covers an area of 750 acres, 7 km northeast of Chania. The institution also owns several historical buildings in Chania, including the former French School, the Venetian complex of the Old Prisons etc.
The Technical University of Crete has five departments:
ERGASYA is a laboratory of the Department of Production Engineering and Management, dating back to 1987. Its research activities includes methodological research dealing with the development and/or improving of decision-making methods & techniques as well as real world studies on systems evaluation and decision support. Professor Yannis Siskos directs ERGASYA team and coordinates the ASTROLAVOS project. Totally the personnel consists of five professors, 3 Ph.D candidates, 13 post-graduate and five undergraduate students.
